The common misconception about the running costs of a Salt Water Pool.

The biggest misconception that people have is that it costs nothing to run a salt water pool People think that because the salt chlorinator makes liquid chlorine, they save by not spending the $20 plus per week they would have to spend on a normal, fresh water chlorine pool.

However, the salt chlorinator in a salt water pool has to run an average of 8 – 10 hours per day to make the required amount of chlorine to safely sanitize the pool. AND the pool pump & filter must run at the same time, as this is controlled by the salt chlorinator – something that is often forgotten by many people.

So, we have a pool pump which draws on average 1,100- 1,500 watts of power per hour and a self cleaning salt chlorinator which draws 395 watts per hour running for 56 – 70 hours per week at a cost of 21 – 28 cents per kilowatt hour. A VERY EXPENSIVE OPERATION!

When you consider that the average fresh water pool with a good quality & size of pump only needs to run for 4 hours per day to filter your pool water to health department standards, you end up paying a very high price for the salt water pool convenience of not having to buy & dose your pool with chlorine.
